Tuesday, June 11, 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Get hands-on with Code Intensives.
Intensives are your opportunity to dig deeper into emerging topics of interest in an intimate setting, or to take a break from thinking and learn a new skill.
This year, we’re bringing back topics we know our Code audience wants more of, like the risks and rewards of investing in China. We’ll also dive into some emerging areas of interest, like preparing for disaster scenarios and the future of drugs and wellness.

Opportunities and Risks for the Tech Sector Amid the Trade War, Huawei Fallout, and IP Fears
Doing business with Chinese companies means incredible opportunity — nine of the top 20 tech companies are based in China — but also high anxiety. This discussion with some of the leading investors in China, who focus on AI, autonomous driving, and 5G, will leave attendees with insights on what to anticipate from the government, the trade war, and the larger geopolitical context, while also revealing today’s and tomorrow’s areas of growth and opportunity.

The emotional struggle facing startup founders and all leaders who truly care about their work can be debilitating. This funk can affect not only the person but also the team and company — unless the stress is properly managed. Hailed as the “CEO Whisperer” by Wired, startup coach and former venture capitalist Jerry Colonna will host a roundtable discussion where he’ll review real-life scenarios and answer your specific questions, all in an off-the-record session. Jerry believes that better humans can make for better leaders, and he’ll examine why radical self-inquiry is critical to professional success and healthy relationships in all realms of life.

In this session, take a trip with academics and researchers through years of research; learn about new discoveries, benefits, and common misconceptions about ayahuasca and magic mushrooms; and take a deep dive into the policy and health trends around these previously taboo substances.

Eater Tasting Dinner
This year, we’re bringing back our signature tasting dinner, featuring chefs curated by Vox Media’s Eater, the most trusted voice in food, dining, and travel. The Eater Dinner is courtesy of IBM.
These Eater-curated chefs will feature the diverse culinary influences of the American Southwest with their own twists.
Mark Bookhamer
Executive Chef, The Normal Restaurant and Bar
Chef Mark Bookhamer strives to champion Arizona’s farming culture through simple, thoughtful sourcing and cooking. After starting his career in custom catering at Fabulous Food, he worked under chef Matt Taylor at Gertrude’s Restaurant in the Desert Botanical Garden before taking over as chef de cuisine at Gertrude’s. In 2018, he left to take the helm as opening executive chef for The Normal Restaurant and Bar at the Graduate Hotel in Tempe. Through the tutelage of owners Armando Hernandez and James Beard Award-winning chef Chris Bianco, he continues to promote a stripped-down approach to cooking that allows the farmer to be the star of the meal.
Rochelle Daniel
Executive Chef, Fat Ox
A native of Phoenix, Rochelle Daniel graduated from Scottsdale Culinary Institute before securing a position at Zinc Bistro in Scottsdale, cooking under the award-winning executive chef Matt Carter. Seeking new challenges, Daniel moved to Sedona to serve as executive chef for Cress on Oak Creek and Etch Kitchen & Bar at L’Auberge de Sedona. Now back in Scottsdale, she has been reunited with Carter to handcraft the Fat Ox’s modern takes on the authentic recipes of rural Italy. Daniel’s unique creativity and understanding of current dining trends have provided her with many highly-esteemed opportunities. She has been recognized as one of the Valley’s Top 5 Sous Chefs by the Arizona Republic and as Best Sous Chef by AZcentral.com. She was inducted into the Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame in 2017.
Scott Holmes
Owner and Chef, Little Miss BBQ
Scott Holmes’s love of cooking began at an early age, helping his mom cook on the kitchen counter. In 1995, he graduated from Scottsdale Culinary Institute. Little Miss BBQ opened in February 2014 with lots of passion, a massive offset smoker, Central Texas barbecue, and a great customer experience. It received glowing reviews in the Arizona Republic, Phoenix Magazine, Phoenix New Times, and others. In 2014, it received the Best New Restaurant award from Phoenix New Times and Phoenix Magazine. Thrillist also named Little Miss BBQ one of the 15 Best New Barbecue Restaurants in 2014. Little Miss BBQ is the highest-rated restaurant in the Phoenix area on both Yelp and Trip Advisor. Although the review site standings are great, the lines outside the restaurant are a true testament to its popularity.
Alvaro Salinas
Sushi Chef, Across the Pond
Alvaro Salinas may have grown up here in the Arizona desert, but he’s dedicated his culinary career to mastering the art of serving and preparing the freshest raw fish as one of the Valley’s premier sushi chefs. Now the sushi chef at Across the Pond, Salinas has partnered with co-owners Nicholas Campisano and Joshua James to craft an authentic Japanese-style sushi menu that pairs perfectly with ATP’s ever-changing list of craft cocktails, beers, and wine. Salinas even brews his soy sauce in-house. Salinas first discovered his love for fresh ocean fish while working for Ra Sushi Bar. He also moonlighted as a private chef working Valley-wide. But it was his decade-plus at Shimogamo, a top-rated sushi restaurant in Chandler, Arizona, that really put Salinas on the map. Salinas can also be found on Instagram as @azurbanchef.
Rebecca Tillman
Executive Sous Chef, The Phoenician
As executive sous chef of The Phoenician, Rebecca Tillman partners with executive chef Rick Boyer to lead culinary operations for the entire resort, directs The Phoenician’s banquet program, and is responsible for the financial management of several à la carte restaurants on the property, including The Canyon Lounge. Previously, Tillman served as executive chef at the Biltmore House, executive sous chef at Destination Kohler’s American Club, and executive chef at Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort. She began her resort career at the Arizona Biltmore in 2000. Tillman studied hospitality administration at Northern Arizona University and culinary arts at the Art Institute of Phoenix. She is a member of the Chefs in School program, the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP), and Les Dames d’Escoffier, an international group of women chefs.

Weather
The Southwest enjoys an arid desert climate with hot days and cool nights. In early June, the average temperature in Scottsdale falls in the high 90s or low 100s during the day, and the mid-70s at night.
To accommodate the climate, we’ve altered the Code schedule so midday activities will be held indoors, affording our guests the opportunity to enjoy the evening climate outdoors.
Attire
Attire for all conference activities and social functions will be casual. Please note that we will be hosting gatherings both outdoors in the dry heat and indoors with air conditioning on full blast, so plan your packing to feel comfortable in both areas.
POLICIES
Your registration fee includes access to conference sessions, scheduled meal functions, conference materials, and social events. Your participation in the conference is governed by several policies. Please refer to your confirmation email for our Registration Transfer and Cancellation Policies.
Media, Recording, and Photography Policy
The Code Conference stage is on the record for journalistic and editorial purposes. Journalists may quote anything the speakers and executive producers say onstage in stories or blog posts. Interviews that occur offstage in the hallways or at social gatherings are subject to whatever ground rules are agreed upon between the parties at the time of the interview.
Still photos, taken from your seats, are okay. We ask that you do not use flash so as not to distract or annoy the speakers or others in attendance. Do not stand or crouch in the aisles or near the stage, as this interferes with our official show photographer, whose photos will be posted online for use by members of the media.
Finally, video and audio recordings are strictly prohibited, as we consider the audio and video content of our stage to be copyrighted. Similarly, while we respect fair-use reprinting of short text quotes, we do consider full transcripts of the conference to be our intellectual property.
This policy applies to all conference attendees.
