Why Code
The Code Conference is a technology conference.
What does that mean?
It means that in 2018, like every year we’ve produced Code — and its predecessor, the D Conference — we brought the leaders of the world’s most important technology companies onstage for frank conversations about the challenges and opportunities ahead of them.
But technology stopped being a discrete industry a long time ago. Now technology is baked into everything so our conversations included people who don’t just run tech companies, but run companies grappling with technological change.
And while some tech leaders wish they could do their work without grappling with government, that’s certainly not the case, and it’s clearer now than ever.
So in 2018, we invited the people in charge of enforcing regulations, and those creating new ones.
We invited government officials leading the conversation around regulation, like Senator Mark Warner and the 25th administrator of President Trump’s Small Business Administration, Linda McMahon.
And we invited tech behemoths dealing with new questions about their role in politics and society, including Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg and Microsoft’s president Brad Smith.
We also heard from a younger generation of tech companies — Spotify, Uber, Airbnb, Snap and Stitch Fix — maturing in a new regulatory environment and increasingly globalized world. Finally, we spoke about cryptocurrency, women in tech and media mega-mergers with the CEOs of AT&T and 21st Century Fox.

Eater Tasting Dinner
Jason Benavente, Executive Chef, Nobu Los Angeles
Chef Jason Benavente has been part of the Nobu culinary team since 2007, starting at Nobu Honolulu before moving to West Hollywood to be executive chef of Nobu Los Angeles. A Hawaii native and graduate of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific in Oahu, Benavente has always been inspired by the impact of family dinners and access to local ingredients, both of which are central to the philosophy of Nobu-style cuisine.
Josef Centeno, Chef and Owner, Bäco Mercat, Bar Amá, Orsa & Winston, P.Y.T. and BäcoShop
Josef Centeno is the chef-owner of five Los Angeles restaurants. He has been called the “culinary mayor” of downtown LA and “a prime mover of what we’ve come to think of as Los Angeles cuisine.” In 2011, Centeno opened his first restaurant, the Eastern Mediterranean-influenced Bäco Mercat, one of the first restaurants to shift critical attention to the center of downtown. Others soon followed: Tex-Mex restaurant Bar Amá, Italian- and Japanese-influenced Orsa & Winston, and vegetable-centered P.Y.T. — all on the same block. Centeno recently ventured across town to Culver City, where he opened BäcoShop. He likes macchiatos, surfing and hanging out with his two dogs, Bear and Winston.
Chris Flint, Executive Chef, NoMad Los Angeles
Chris Flint is the executive chef of NoMad Los Angeles, the first West Coast project by restaurateur Will Guidara and chef Daniel Humm. Following stints at Kittichai, Bouley and Bar Blanc, Flint joined the Eleven Madison Park team in 2008. He quickly climbed the ranks, helping the restaurant receive four stars from The New York Times and three Michelin stars before joining the NoMad NY opening team in 2012 as executive sous chef; he contributed to that restaurant receiving three stars from The New York Times and one Michelin star. Flint returned to EMP in 2013 as chef de cuisine, helping to lead the restaurant to the No. 1 spot on the 2017 World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Flint currently oversees the culinary program for all NoMad LA food and beverage outlets, including the Mezzanine, Lobby, Coffee Bar and Rooftop Café.
Valerie Gordon, Chocolatier, Pastry Chef, Author and Owner, Valerie Confections
Celebrated Los Angeles chocolatier and James Beard finalist cookbook author Valerie Gordon has the business acumen of a Martha Stewart, the warm and effortless entertaining style of a Nigella Lawson and the edgy, fun, no-nonsense approach of an Anthony Bourdain. Gordon’s recipes and her namesake confectionary, Valerie Confections, have been recognized in national media outlets including Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, The Wall Street Journal, InStyle, The New York Times, Vogue and the Food Network. Her first cookbook, Sweet, was a 2014 James Beard Award finalist. A San Francisco native, Gordon spent her formative culinary years in the Bay Area during the early days of the farm-to-table movement, before relocating to LA to run Les Deux Cafes. She founded Valerie Confections in 2004 with her partner, Stan Weightman Jr. She also owns two contemporary-Californian, French-influenced cafes and bakeries. She has created collaborative products with a wide range of companies and personalities, including Commune Design, Clare V. and Edible Gardens LA.
Timothy Hollingsworth, Chef and Owner, Otium
Chef Timothy Hollingsworth is the chef and owner of Otium, an ambitious contemporary restaurant adjacent to The Broad. His menu is one of sophisticated rusticity, with highly eclectic, vibrant and seasonal flavors, accessible to every palate. Prior to opening Otium, Hollingsworth spent 13 years at Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry, where he learned from former chefs de cuisine Eric Ziebold and Corey Lee. Keller selected Hollingsworth to join a core team that traveled to New York City to train and prepare for the opening of Per Se, Keller’s second three-Michelin-starred restaurant. In 2008, he competed in the Bocuse d’Or USA, placing first and winning the chance to represent the United States at the prestigious Bocuse d’Or. He has won multiple awards, including the Rising Star Chef Award from The San Francisco Chronicle and the Rising Star Chef of the Year Award, presented by the James Beard Foundation.
Jessica Koslow, Chef and Owner, Sqirl
Jessica Koslow is an award winning American chef and owner of the LA hotspot Sqirl. She is a 2018 James Beard Award Finalist in the Best Chef category, and has been dubbed the “leader of New California Cuisine.”
Koslow got her start at Anne Quatrano’s Bacchanalia and Star Provisions, learning to cook in one of the South’s most esteemed kitchens. She opened Sqirl LA in 2011 as a jam storefront, and quickly expanded it into a small breakfast-and-lunch spot, which serves a famed sorrel pesto rice bowl and other delights, drawing around-the-block lines and some of the most “liked” food photos on Instagram.
Koslow is on René Redzepi’s MAD board, and is active in the Edible School Yard.
Vivian Ku, Chef and Owner, Pine & Crane and Joy
Vivian Ku grew up on her family’s Chinese vegetable farm in Bakersfield, California, and from an early age, she got to see greens grown and harvested through the seasons. Ku then studied economics at Harvard College, which is where she realized she wanted to run restaurants for a living. She ran Quincy Grill on campus, and staged at Henrietta’s Table in Harvard Square on the side. Ku attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. She was heavily inspired by her time at Chez Panisse, where quality ingredients were simple, respected and allowed to shine on their own. In 2014, she opened Pine & Crane in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, and recently opened a sister concept called Joy in LA’s Highland Park neighborhood.
Nguyen Tran, Chef and Owner, Starry Kitchen and Button Mash
An accidental restaurateur, Nguyen Tran started an illegal underground phenomenon out of their apartment in North Hollywood — it eventually became the No. 1 Asian-fusion restaurant listing in Los Angeles on Yelp in 2009. They have since gone legit (at times), continued to stumble and fail upward with their delicious pan-Asian comfort tomfoolery, banana-suit megaphone shenanigans, highly publicized marijuana-dinner antics and double entendres galore, with their most famous signature dish — crispy tofu balls — taking the lead. After building a loyal fan base, they opened new restaurants in downtown LA, the Fashion District, Chinatown and Echo Park. Their story has been told by LA Times, Eater, The New Yorker, The New York Times, NPR and Food & Wine magazine, among others. They also recently published their own memoir/cookbook/how-to-start-your-own-illegal-and-underground-restaurant guide, Adventures in Starry Kitchen, with HarperOne.
Andrew Vaughan, Chef de Cuisine, mar’sel
At mar’sel, the signature restaurant at Terranea Resort, Chef de Cuisine Andrew Vaughan applies French technique to ingredients sourced from on-site gardens and farms as well as local, sustainable purveyors to create “farm-to-Terranea” dishes that accent seasonality. Brought up in Louisiana, Vaughan spent countless hours cooking in his home kitchen before attending Sowela Technical College in New Orleans and the Culinary Institute of America. He received training at Chateau Nouveau, L’Etoile and Restaurant Daniel, working alongside Daniel Boulud. Before Terranea, he worked at Emeril Lagasse’s Nola Restaurant and Simon LA. At Terranea, Vaughan upgraded Nelson’s restaurant program to use more sustainable seafood. He then started working with the resort’s executive chef, Bernard Ibarra, on corporate banquets, VIP events and special dinners at mar’sel, before earning the chef de cuisine post. Vaughan has been featured by LA Food & Wine Festival, Los Angeles Magazine’s Food Event and the Sustainable Seafood Expo.
